So my 2008 GMC Acadia SLT2 AWD came with Goodyear Eagle RS/A pMetric P255/60/r19 and the vehicle reached 44.5K miles. The tires would be fine in California, but the weather in Texas has left me feeling a little unsure of their traction after a hydroplaning incident with my daughter in the backseat with the first light October 2011 rain in Austin, TX. This lead me to do a bit of research on a few tires - my options ranged from Goodyear Eagle RS-A, Michelin Latitude Tour, Firestone Destination ST, Hankook Ventus AS RH07, and the Bridgestone Dueler H/L Alenza model. Tires for the vehicle are double a normal passenger car, and I don't want to purchase another set of tires until the new ones wear out, so I went ahead with Part No:03835 - Michelin Latitude Tour:

Now, the Michelin site will not show an available tire for the GMC Acadia because the speed rating on the OEM tire is 108H (Max Speed of 130mph or 210 km/h) and the Michelin Latitude Tour is a 108S (Max Speed 112mph or 180 km/h), but they do work on the GMC Acadia and appear to be the tires on the Buick Enclave. So I started researching pricing on the Michelin Latitude Tour and found the best price of $238 @ Discount Tire. I called a few placed and it appears to be a special order tire, so everyone was charging an arm and a leg. My last call was to Costco who offers The Costco Advantage which offers lifetime maintenance for the life of the tire, inflation pressure checks, tire balancing, tire rotations, flat tire repair, nitrogen, and a road hazard warranty. The Costco at WM Cannon / Mopac offered the Michelin Latitude Tour @ $246.99 per tire + $14 Installation + $1 Disposal + $2 TPMS for a total of $263.99 per tire. They also have a Michelin rebate of $70 if you buy a set of 4 tires so the total with 8.25% Austin Texas salestax was $1143.08 - $70 (Mail In Rebate 2-4 weeks wait) was $1073.07. Great Price! All I had to do was go pay and THEN they would special order the 4 tires and have me come in 2-4 business days to have them installed. The Costco Advantage provides a plethora of benefits, Discount Tire matches all the services with the exception of Nitrogen filled tires, but DIscount Tire beats Costco's overall value by providing their Certificate for Repair, Refund, and Replacement. Remember, the cost for my certificate is expensive because I'm in an expensive tire, but the cost is tiered based on the value of the tire, so if you're in a smaller economic car the cost of the certificate could be as low as $5-$10!

I called Discount Tire (Slaugther / Manchaca) last night @ 4:00pm and asked the salesman Eric if they had them in stock @ that location. His answer was "NO" but he would check others inventory. He came back about 2-3 minutes and said, while we don't have them in stock, if you want them installed tomorrow I can go pick them up and have them ready for you tomorrow (Saturday, October 29, 2011)... how could I say no? I said OK and he said thank you and hung up. He didn't ask for money or how much I was willing to pay. He just had them there and no mention of payment. I received a call @ 7:28am today (Saturday, October 29, 2011) and it was Eric in the store 30 minutes early to go pick up my tires... now THAT is customer service. There was still no mention of price... my word alone was enough for his manager to allow him to pick up an expensive set of inventory on a whim. He set up an appointment @ 1:15pm with a 45 minute wait time.

I went in around 10:30am to talk #'s on the tires. The initial quote from him was $1250... i then presented him with the offer from Costco and a valid # from the party I dealt with and he took my word for it... it was awesome! They priced each tire @ $233 per tire (Costco was going to price match DiscountTIreDirect.com's advertised price of $238 but would have to get manager approval and I would have to pay for my order and wait for them to have them shipped) which was even sweeter. I unfortunately had to replace one of the Goodyear Eagle RS/A's a couple years ago because I hit the sidewall and it was unrepairable. I paid $208 + $30 for the lifetime replacement Warranty. So my total was $1023.00 and with the added Discount Tire Replacement came out to $1,006.32 installation, tpms, balancing, alignment, and their all inclusive tire warranty... they even matched Michelin's $70 rebate card on the stop without making me wait 2-4 weeks for Michelin to send a prepaid Visa! The best part is the Michelin Latitude Tour tires will last 65,000!!!

Total Cost Per Installed Tire: $251.58 (Includes a $208 Credit for the Goodyear Eagle RS/A with a nail since I replaced all 4 tires)

The reason I always choose Discount Tire is because of their Customer Service and their Certificate for Repair, Refund or Replacement. Sure, the warranty certificate seems expensive @ $30-$35 a tire, but a replacement tire is expensive on these vehicles, and having peace of mind that they will be replaced is enough to warrant the additional investment. That and them never bitching about doing things for free is icing on the cake, and they are willing to match pricing from other locations to earn your business. I work for a large corporation and know that there are times I just can't beat a smaller competitors pricing, so it's nice to see Discount Tire do what it takes to earn your business and undercut the other folk.
